Tuchel Wants Bellingham's Aggression Provided England's Star Sets Aside Egotism Outside.
A single omission was enough. A second one and it might have appeared spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is much too clever not to realize that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require help from Jude Bellingham, although it is equally on the midfielder to adapt to the tactical structures and player rankings required with the national team now that he is back in Tuchel's supportive environment.
Tuchel wants his aggressive mentality, his fire, but it is a matter of harnessing it constructively. Individual quality counts but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is a price to pay when stardom dominates. Still, a point has been made.
Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after being left out of the previous squad. He observed the national side book their place at next summer’s World Cup without him. He saw the young talent perform brilliantly as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He listened as Tuchel discuss appreciating the team's dynamism and ethics. Inevitably, he has reacted in winning fashion, finding the back of the net for his club versus their rivals and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; leaving him out again would have left his World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.
The expectation is that the manager will have a midfielder concentrating on pressuring the opposition instead of teammates. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is no advantage to creating tension with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time on the sidelines has demonstrated that playing for one's country is a valuable, precarious thing. The coach, on his side, can now provide cover for the 22-year-old after proving that he is unafraid to drop big names.
“There is no problem with him, and no concern with the character,” the German stated. “Jude possesses that aggression. It takes that kind of fire to reach the heights that he reached. We all need to support him and establish a setting which he can [have] this edge against rivals and towards the goals we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham took up most of the attention at the team news conference for the upcoming meaningless matches versus one opponent and the other. Who else? Well, what about another talent? Here is a further gifted No 10 in need of love and guidance. Foden has been absent for the national team since March and has found it hard to hit the heights recently but the boss could not ignore the player after his performance in Manchester City’s win versus Borussia Dortmund this week.
The question, though, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at available. Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be a strong case to pick Cole Palmer once he overcomes a ongoing injury. Is selecting multiple creators to the tournament be too many? Gareth Southgate never found the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He compromised by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, cramping Harry Kane’s style in the process.
It seems unlikely the current manager doing similar if it harms the team harmony. Space exists for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the wings. Clear roles is beneficial. He is in as a central attacker. The new call-up, selected for the first time, is a No 8 and the recalled Wharton will vie with Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no wide role for Foden, who must play central. The coach prefers him near Kane. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘You are needed in the team but there’s no space on your best position, could you fill in at left wing? Or the right wing?” he said. “Phil will play in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I have this fantasy regarding him for years. In my view it fits his style best.”
He conceded there are times when Foden has not looked himself in an England shirt. “You feel as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight to play football, then clearly something is not right, whether it's the position, the setup, it's unclear.
“I think he is also so used to representing Man City in a certain structure, to have a defined role. I think he benefits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? When should I to push the tempo? What are my to defensive duties?”
Tuchel talked about Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and the other scoring goals from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is recognized for his good displays for City at left-back. Interest is high.
The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested using Foden as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or the other. Other options, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and the winger are other options should Kane be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for a little experimentation.
Meanwhile, it is also a chance to foster Kane’s relationship with Bellingham flowing. It is remarkable that one must look back to Bellingham setting up the captain to net in a friendly win against the Scots in over a year ago to find the one and only time in 35 games for England when the pair combined for a goal. Tuchel will know that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other once during the team's ties with Denmark and another at the European Championship. The connection is missing.
“At this point at some point it falls to the duty of the players,” Tuchel stated. He does not shy away to be blunt. There is still a sense of Bellingham under scrutiny. He cannot even be guaranteed to start versus Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants Bellingham committed but he will be monitoring him carefully. Leave the ego outside. Doing so could turn a powerful squad into an superior one.
