The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series from Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the opening appears stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.

This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by artist the talented musician. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as among these.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
