The English golfer Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Play-Off Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating his compatriot in a dramatic play-off following a rollercoaster final round of play.

Rai nailed a crucial birdie putt from around eight foot to seal the victory, repeating his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win against Fleetwood.

Sunday's Play Excitement

Rai entered the final round with a single stroke lead over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.

The challenger edged a stroke clear with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last green.

Playoff Decider

This led to a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even better individual. To compete alongside him the last two days was really special,” stated the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the present how it is. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”

The Danish golfer carded six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Mansell hit an superb last round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
