Slot Asserts He Is Secure and Retains The Club's Backing Following PSV Defeat
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it was natural for doubts to be raised about his position following a further convincing defeat against PSV Eindhoven.
The Reds suffered their ninth loss in twelve games, marking the club's worst run after being relegated in 1953-54.
They were dominated by the Dutch league title holders on a difficult night at Anfield.
“I'm confident, things are alright, I have got plenty of support from above,” the coach commented.
“It would be nice to change things and get a victory of course but when you're coaching a team and struggling then it's typical that questions are asked.”
He continued, “I accept my situation. This isn't the first time I’ve been in a difficult position but it is about time that we changed our fortunes.”
Talks with The Board
When asked to expand on his discussions with the club's leadership, Slot explained:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive for the squad and to me and we have those conversations but they aren't calling me all the time of the day to say they trust me.”
He mentioned, “During our regular exchanges I perceive the confidence. But I've not talked to them since this match so far so it remains to be seen.”
Familiar Failings and Player Reaction
The manager expressed regret over known weaknesses from his squad in their European loss, namely wasted chances and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more forthright in his evaluation of the club’s predicament.
“I haven't got the solutions. Truthfully, I don’t. I’m saying that to all,” Jones said.
“It's simply not good enough. I don't have to wait to think about it. I'm beyond feeling anger internally. I've reached the stage now where I simply lack the vocabulary.”
He added, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the club I love. I'm a supporter, and I've watched Liverpool since I was young.”
“For many years, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team enduring a phase like this with outcomes so bad.”
He concluded, “But we continue to wear the crest on our shirts. And until it is removed, we'll continue to battle.”
“We will attempt to get this team return to its rightful place, show everyone again the values of this club and why it's known as the top club in the world.”
“At this moment, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
