Milei Statuette, Anyone? Meloni to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause
Relinquishing undesired offerings can be viewed as somewhat rude – except if it's done the right way.
A Philanthropic Auction
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell an estimated 270 gifts given to her by world leaders during her travels. The diverse haul could include gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.
These items, together, are worth an estimated €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold in a public auction by a Rome-based auction firm. An exact timeline has not been finalized, but the goal is to conduct the sale by year's end, with the revenue benefiting various charities.
Storage Room Holdings
The presents reportedly locked away in a repository on the third floor of the government headquarters. Reports indicate that Meloni furthermore planning to auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been stored away over a long period.
The full gift list is yet to be disclosed, but some insight were revealed earlier this year when an 11-page list of official presents was submitted to lawmakers. The query focused on if a legal value limit was being honored. According to regulation, a prime minister cannot take home presents worth more than €300.
An International Assortment of Presents
Among the items:
- A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
- A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
- A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
- A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
- A electronic pad from the Ukrainian president.
- Artworks from the Moldovan government.
- An assortment including makeup, a board, and several rugs received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the most unusual gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.
Diplomatic Context
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from her allies, with winning over global statesmen and positioning Italy as a key protagonist on the world stage once again.
This unique auction represents a distinct method to handle the diplomatic artifacts that are collected during a time in office.
