European Cup Fixtures Tonight: Chelsea v Barcelona & More

Welcome to another evening of thrilling European Cup soccer. Nine games are set for this evening, with three British teams in action. Chelsea meet Barça in the standout match of the evening, while Newcastle travel to Marseille and City host Leverkusen.

Current Standings

It's the halfway point of the group phase, meaning the rankings is taking form. Each of the six British sides are presently in the top 12, but there are only 2 points between fifth and sixteenth position, so there's a sense of uncertainty about the entire situation. Everything is to play for.

Past Meetings

The only previous meeting between Marseille and Newcastle was the Europa League semifinal of 2004, won by an emerging star from Côte d'Ivoire. Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen have not faced each other previously. Chelsea and Barcelona have a notable history.

Initial Game Reports

Only a single goal during the opening period of the early fixtures. Samuel Dahl's 6th-minute sizzler has earned Benfica under Mourinho a 1-0 lead away to Ajax.

Marseille v Newcastle Preview

Even though Newcastle arrived in the French south fresh from their restorative 2-1 home Premier League victory over City on the weekend, and having beaten Union Saint-Gilloise, Benfica and Bilbao in the Champions League, their only on the road victory since the start of April came in Brussels at Union SG.

It's not that Howe was eager to talk about the psychological aspect of this travel sickness. “The European Cup is different to Premier League games,” said the coach, whose side are sixth in the Champions League standings, with nine points from a available 12 and direct qualification to the knockout phase almost within touching distance. “I don’t know if you can draw parallels between them.”

We have a separate live blog for Chelsea v Barcelona. Murray, the MBM version of Diego Maradona is on duty for that.
